Discover the ways that people stayed stylish while doing their bit for King and country with make do & mend displays, as well as unravelling the story of utility clothing. Plus, go deeper into the history of service uniform and explore the stories of different occupations from the home-front to the frontline.

Enjoy 1940s entertainment with our starring acts! Sing along to the hits of the day with The Bluebird Belles, put your best foot forward and dance to the sounds of Kalamazoo Dance Band, and hear the famous tunes of George Formby played to perfection by singer Joe Thomas.

Plus, find out how the people of this region united against difficult odds to support the war effort both at home and at the front. Visit the colliery to learn the story of the Bevin boys, uncover the contributions of wartime volunteers with our ARP warden, and head into our houses to discover how creativity and good spirits helped people to overcome the challenges of food rationing.

Visitors are welcome to dress in military uniform if they wish – allied forces only.

Join us on the evening of 15th July and get ‘in the mood’ to immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of wartime Britain, as we transform our canalside village into a homefront community celebrating VE day. Get your glad rags on and enjoy live music from the D-Day Darlings as well as other vintage musical acts including the Kalamazoo Dance Band, try your hand at a dance workshop or enjoy a taste of our legendary fish and chips – thank goodness potatoes aren’t on the ration!

With reenactors to meet, vintage markets to browse and entertainment to enjoy, this year’s 1940s evening is not to be missed!

Entry to this event is by pre-booked special ticket only. UnChained Annual Passes are not valid for entry.
