Birmingham Music
Birmingham’s contribution to the catalogue of music goes way beyond the call of duty. From within our city limits heavyweights of the musical world have rocked, rapped, plucked and popped their way into your ears via the medium of music.
We’re not one to name drop... oh go on then - Ozzy Osbourne, Duran Duran, UB40, Judas Priest, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Ned’s Atomic Dustbin, The Wonderstuff, Napalm Death. More recent you say? Then take acts such as Asian Dub Foundation, Ocean Colour Scene, Mike Skinner (The Streets), The Editors and Jamelia, all of whom have kept Birmingham at the top of your playlist.
Or for the contemporary classical music lover why not experience the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. Established in 1987 with Simon Rattle as Founding Patron it's one of Europe’s leading ensembles with players from the CBSO.
The Home of Metal
‘The Home of Metal’ is a project that celebrates heavy metal and the heritage of the genre in Birmingham and the Black Country. As well as creating a digital archive documenting the evolution of heavy metal from the 60’s to present day, the project also aims to reclaim the ‘Birthplace of Metal’ title for Birmingham and the Black Country.
The project is organised by Birmingham-based art and music promoters Capsule. Co-directors Lisa Meyer and Jenny Moore decided that it was time that the region made more noise about its heavy metal heritage. Learn more about The Home of Metal Project here
